Original Medicare is a strong foundation for healthcare coverage, but it was never designed to cover everything. There are deductibles, coinsurance amounts, and gaps in coverage that can add up quickly, especially for Florida residents who use healthcare services regularly or who want predictability in what they will pay from year to year. Medicare Supplement plans, also known as Medigap policies, exist specifically to fill those gaps. This guide will walk you through how they work, what the standardized plan options mean, and how to think about which one fits your situation.
A Medicare Supplement plan is a private insurance policy that works alongside Original Medicare, meaning Parts A and B. When you receive a covered service, Original Medicare pays its share first, and then your Medigap policy pays some or all of the remaining costs, depending on which plan you have. The result is that your out-of-pocket exposure is reduced, sometimes substantially, compared to having Original Medicare alone.
Because Medicare Supplement plans are standardized by the federal government, every insurer offering a particular plan letter must provide the same core benefits. A Plan G from one insurance company covers the same services as a Plan G from another. What differs between insurers is the monthly premium, the company's financial strength and service reputation, and in some cases the rate increase history of the policy over time. This standardization is genuinely useful because it allows you to compare plans across carriers based on cost and service rather than trying to decode different benefit structures.
Among the standardized Medigap options, a few plan letters are consistently the most popular among Florida residents. Plan G is currently one of the most comprehensive options available to new Medicare enrollees, covering the Part A deductible, Part A coinsurance and hospital costs, Part B coinsurance and copayments, skilled nursing facility coinsurance, and foreign travel emergency care up to plan limits. The only cost Plan G does not cover is the annual Part B deductible, which you pay once per year before the plan kicks in.
Plan N is another option worth understanding. It covers most of the same costs as Plan G but includes some cost-sharing in the form of copays for certain office visits and emergency room visits that do not result in an inpatient admission. In exchange, Plan N typically carries a lower monthly premium than Plan G. For Florida residents who are in good health and do not anticipate frequent doctor visits, Plan N can offer solid protection at a lower cost.
High-deductible versions of some plans are also available and may appeal to people who want catastrophic protection at the lowest possible premium and are comfortable covering routine costs out of pocket.
The most important thing to understand about Medicare Supplement enrollment is that the best time to apply is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period. This six-month window begins the month you are both 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this window, insurers are required to sell you any Medigap policy they offer at the best available rate, regardless of your health status. They cannot charge you more or deny you coverage based on pre-existing conditions.
Once that window closes, insurers in most states, including Florida, can use medical underwriting when you apply for a new or different Medigap policy. That means your health history can affect whether you are approved and what you pay. This is one of the most compelling reasons to make a thoughtful Medigap decision at the time of your initial Medicare enrollment rather than deferring it.
